Legal Rights of the Elderly Forum

North Mississippi Rural Legal Services, Central Mississippi, Inc. and North Central Area Agency on Aging sponsored a Forum on Legal Rights of the Elderly at the Multipurpose Building located on Highway 7 By-Pass in Coffeeville, MS on Monday, February 24, 2003. Greenville office Managing Attorney Catherine L. Farris made a presentation on "The IRS: Your Rights and Responsibilities." Ms. Farris is the Coordinator of NMRLS' Taxpayer Assistance Project.

Ms. Carolyn Parker of Central Mississippi, Inc. organized the event. Ms. Betty Withers of NMRLS assisted with registration.

Marisa C. Atkinson, a law student working with the University of Mississippi Law School Civil Legal Clinic, gave a presentaion on "Nursing Home Rights." She addressed the Medicaid estate recovery and transfer of assets rules.

Catherine V. "Ginny" Kilgore, NMRLS Elder Law Director and Coordinator of NMRLS Mississippi Medicare Assistance Patrol Project (MSMAPP) described MSMAPP and explained methods of detecting and reporting fraud and abuse in the Medicare and Medicaid Programs.

Law Student John Givens of of the UM Law School Civil Legal Clinic gave a presentation on "Why You Need a Will."

Approximately 30 members of the general public attended this seminar.
